This image shows

downtown Staunton in the year 1891.

Landmarks recognizable in modern times include:

bulletTrain station - lower right hand corner
bulletClock Tower - upper left hand corner
bulletAugusta County Courthouse - right center
bulletThe "Wharf" building (numbered "30") - directly across street from train station
bulletThe "Board and Batten House" at the corner of Lewis Street and Spring Street (now Johnson St.)

The area where the current farmers' market is located has changed dramatically over the past century. "Spring" street is now called "Johnson" street. What we now know as the "Wharf Parking Lot" was that area on the corner of Lewis and Spring streets and was full of small buildings in the late 19th century.
